Recuperation, or mechanical ventilation with heat recovery, may seem complicated, but no worries – we explain everything! To understand how recuperation works, we first need to understand what mechanical ventilation is.
What is ventilation?
Every building – a house, an apartment, an office, or an industrial facility – needs fresh air. It is crucial both for our health and for meeting Swedish indoor air exchange standards. This is where ventilation comes in. Its main task is to replace the air – used air is extracted, while fresh air is supplied from outside. Ventilation is mandatory according to Swedish building regulations.
How does ventilation work in homes and apartments?
You have probably seen ventilation grilles in various rooms, and these consist of:

Supply air vents – usually installed in living rooms, bedrooms, and offices – where you spend most of your time.

Exhaust air vents – found in kitchens, bathrooms, and other areas where moisture and odors are generated.
How does mechanical ventilation work?
Mechanical ventilation works through units that control airflow in a regulated manner.

- The air is filtered, significantly improving its quality – pollen, dust, and other pollutants are removed. Additionally, modern ventilation units include ionizers for even cleaner air.
- Heat is recovered, meaning that fresh air brought into the building in winter is warmed by the used air extracted from humid areas, and in summer, it is instead cooled.
- Energy is saved, as recuperation can recover up to 90% of the heat, leading to lower heating costs.
For the system to work efficiently, a recuperation unit is required. This is where the actual heat exchange takes place – the used air transfers its energy to the fresh air without mixing. The unit also acts as the control system for the entire setup, ensuring optimal airflow and filtration.
